Will Your Georgia Generator Dealer Still Be There Tomorrow?
Why Private Equity-Owned Generator Dealers May Struggle During Economic Uncertainty
In March 2025, I first laid out the risk that Private Equity (PE) poses to consumers. PEs are entities that acquire companies such as generator dealers, HVAC, plumbing, and electrical contractors. The goal is to cut costs, increase profit, combine with other dealers, and ultimately sell in 5 to 7 years.
Saddled with rising inflation, uncertainty about national and international events, and increasing interest rates, which all contribute to a slowdown in the economy, some generator dealers are becoming uneasy, particularly those owned by PE. A major factor contributing to this uneasiness is that most PEs carry substantial debt (reported to be as high as 60%) tied to variable interest rates.
This PE stress is validated by frequent reports of Private Credit (PC) entities failing to meet redemption requests from investors. PCs function as private lenders, but unlike banks they do not have the same regulatory requirements, allowing them to take on higher risk. PCs are a major provider of loans to PEs who use this debt to amplify returns on their investments. So, when PEs fail to achieve their projected earnings, debt payments fall behind, cash flow suffers and PCs don’t get paid.
What Private Equity Consolidation Could Mean for Generator Customers & Employees
So where does this leave customers and employees of PE-owned firms?
- Some PEs will survive by cutting costs, increasing margins, and reducing personnel. The result: quality of service declines.
- Other PEs will be sold or consolidated into other PE firms, resulting in uncertainty and confusion for customers and employees.
Regardless of the resulting scenario, the customer’s quality of service will likely decline, and employee security will be at risk.
