During my 32 years working for Atlanta Gas Light/AGL Resources, I was involved in many significant transitions including planning for the Y2K event. Our Y2K planning included ensuring that we had the appropriate backup systems in place in the event computer systems failed. This involved securing and installing generator systems at strategic locations. While this was not my first exposure to standby generators, it was my first realization of how important they could be when utility power goes down.

In the fall of 2002 I formed GenSpring Power to market and sell quality standby power generator systems in the residential market.  From my Y2K experience, I knew that the market for these systems was in its infancy, and I believed that these systems would grow in popularity. 

Initially I became a Generac dealer since they were about the only game in town for residential generators. As I further investigated the market, I learned of Briggs & Stratton and Kohler generator systems.  I found that Briggs & Stratton had a comprehensive training program with a special emphasis on engines. Briggs was also the first to recognize that power management could allow a small generator system (less than 20kW) to do the work of a larger generator. In researching Kohler, I found that they had excellent generator solutions up to 100kW. Carefully studying both products, I determined that their product lines complimented our business plan of offering the most advanced products with the best technology.

Fast forward to 2020. My instincts were correct.  GenSpring Power is now the largest residential Briggs & Stratton as well as the largest Kohler dealer in Georgia. Two of my sons, Glenn Preble – president and Scott Preble – vice president, have played a key role in building our successful company. Together, as we continue to grow, Glenn and Scott are providing leadership for our sales and service organization. I could not be more proud!
