Depending on the duration of the power outage, our SimpliPhi system will not only save on propane costs, but also preserve energy to keep our home warm and comfortable in the event of an extended outage or propane fuel shortage.

Over the weekend of May 21-22, 2022 we conducted a test of the first SimpliPhi energy storage system installed in Georgia. The results exceeded our expectations.

The installed system is the SimpliPhi AccESS 15.2kW with 4 PHI 3.8kWh 48 VDC batteries and Sol-Ark 12K Inverter & Integrated Charge Controller. The 4 batteries store energy so it is available to be converted into the equivalent of utility power when called upon. The system is grid-tied and is backed up with a natural gas generator. A critical circuit sub-panel covers the entire home – lighting, gas furnace, refrigerator, freezer, dishwasher, small appliances, home office and entertainment center. During the test, the transition from utility power was immediate, and life went on as usual, totally uninterrupted.

Tax Credits – Tax credits are supposedly needed to offset the costs of a solar installation because without them the purchase offers a less attractive return on investment. This is the government’s way of encouraging you to do something that without the tax credit, you probably wouldn’t do. The truth is, if one person gets a tax break, someone else pays for it.

Energy $ Savings – This so-called benefit relies on your solar energy to offset purchased utility power with solar energy you produce. The industry calls this Net Metering. Under this scheme, when the sun goes down, so does your solar collection. Likewise, on cloudy days, your solar energy production is not as efficient. Recently, we were asked to examine and service a home generator in North Georgia. The client was experiencing problems with their home generator, and the original dealer of the brand had proposed a very expensive repair. The client’s generator was installed by one of our competitors and was a brand we do not sell. Upon our inspection, we found the original contractor had installed a 35kW generator for the home without pouring a slab. Additionally, due to the slope of the land, the original installers had attempted to level the generator by using blocks under one long side edge. This is a big mistake for several reasons. First, generators of this size should not be installed without a slab. Second, generators of this size have an open bottom, and in this case, it allowed rodents to take up residence inside and destroy the generator. The rodents chewed electrical lines, nested in the rotor/Stator area, and essentially ruined the generator. The generator was not only beyond economical repair, but the rodent infestation made working on it a health hazard.

When Dawson county decided to replace a bridge with a failed inspection, they selected Georgia Bridge to do the job. There were many challenges with this project, however, the main obstacle was the electrical feed to a property on the other side of the bridge. The electrical had to be taken out of service during construction and something had to be done to solve the electrical problem quickly. Georgia Bridge contacted GenSpring Power to develop a plan of action to maintain power for the property owner. The key to this project’s success was keeping the owner’s prize Koi fish comfortable during the four week construction period.

A Grid Under Siege: Georgia’s Utilities Are Being Threatened

There are several common power outage scenarios to take into consideration when preparing for an outage – all of which we’ve outlined to help homeowners anticipate and prepare for scenarios ranging from “short-term inconvenience” to “long-term exceptional.”

Yet over the past two years since we originally published this article, we continue to hear frequent reports of various types of threats to the electric utility grid. In fact, many of our customers share their concerns regarding these threats, specifically when it comes to utility infrastructure and the potential for cyberterrorism.

Utility infrastructure is a weak link

It’s optimistic to see so much new residential and commercial construction throughout Georgia as our economy continues to strengthen. In addition to the road construction necessary to support this increase in activity, the local utility infrastructure will also need to be expanded as contractors connect new distribution lines. However, it’s the feeder and transmission lines serving multiple areas which must be specifically upgraded to ultimately support this growth. If there is weakness in the overall infrastructure, then there could be more frequent power outages during peak periods of demand – such as on extremely hot or cold days.

As the Genspring Power service team meets with customers, we’re often asked, “Why does the power go out on a perfectly nice day?” More than likely the answer is that some component of this expanded infrastructure failed. Recently, we met one-on-one with a customer who is frequently briefed on cyber threats in the utility industry. This of course prompted us to ask, “How real is the threat of cyberterrorism?” Without hesitation he answered, “Far more serious than the general public realizes.” Another GenSpring Power customer who works in computer security confirmed the same sentiment: this threat is real and should be taken seriously. 5 Factors Influencing How Long Your Home Generator Will Run

We addressed the common question, “ How long can my home generator run? ” a few years ago in a former blog post, but with new technological advancements in generator systems, plus an increase in the makes-and-models available, it’s still just as relevant today.

The very short answer is… it depends, as there are a handful of factors in determining how long your whole house generator can run and power your home.

Factor 1: The quality of your generator’s engine

Similar to any powerful machine, the engine is the workhorse of a generator system, which is why the quality of the engine plays a key role in both performance and life of the engine. It creates the force enabling your generator system to produce the electricity necessary to power your home.

Our recommendation: The GenSpring Power service team recommends purchasing a generator with an engine manufactured by the same company producing the generator itself, or uses an engine built by a quality-recognized engine manufacturer.

Factor 2: The speed of your generator’s engine

In order to produce consistent electric power, the engine must maintain a certain speed, matching the generator’s specifications. For example: most liquid cooled generators run at 1800 RPM, whereas air cooled generators run upwards 3600 RPM, requiring their engines to work harder since they’re running at double the speed.

Our recommendation: During a prolonged power outage, we recommend stopping the generator periodically as specified by the manufacturer in order to check the oil. This could be during a weekday morning when no one is home so your family isn’t suffering without a functional HVAC system and food doesn’t spoil.

Factor 3: The oil and oil filter used in your generator

Oil is the lifeblood of an internal combustion engine, and serves two key roles: lubrication and cooling. A heavily loaded generator system will require the engine to work much harder in order to maintain its rated capacity. So, over time, a heavily loaded engine will run hotter and therefore use oil faster than a generator operating under normal conditions.

The oil filter serves a very important purpose as well, as it cleans the oil while the generator’s engine is running to keep it free of debris, ensuring better performance and longer life of the generator.

Our recommendation: Oil levels should be checked, topped off and changed as necessary. Always follow the generator manufacturer’s recommendations with respect to the type and grade of your oil, especially since it has a very limited shelf life. Additionally, we recommend you change the oil filter every time you change the oil in your generator. And in order to ensure warranty coverage, you should use only genuine oil filters as specified by the manufacturer.

Factor 4: The surrounding outdoor temperature

The warmer the outdoor temperature, the higher the temperature your generator is likely to run. And, as we mentioned above, a heavily loaded engine will use oil much faster than a generator operating within normal conditions.

Our recommendation: To help offset summer heat as a potential issue, carefully consider the discussion in Factor 5 below…

Factor 5: The quality of generator installation

Finally, proper generator installation plays an important role in the ability of the generator to pull-in and freely exhaust a sufficient amount of air while it’s operating. If the exhaust or air intake is impeded, the generator may not operate as intended.

Part of the joy in working one-on-one with our customers is getting acquainted with their home and their family. Recently, I had the pleasure of working with a delightful couple living in Sautee Nacoochee, a small community just North of Cleveland, GA. When they first contacted GenSpring Power last Fall they were adamant about installing a Kohler power generator . It’s also nice to have your cell phone fully-charged by the time you wake up in the morning so you can check the weather, email, and of course – Facebook. So it’s no wonder the United States has increased its electricity consumption by 196 billion kWh between 2007 and 2017 ¹ . (For perspective, that’s enough to power over 130 million 50” flat-screen TVs for one full day ² !) As a side-effect of our dependency on electronic devices, we have also experienced the sudden rush of fear when when electric utility service goes down and all of those conveniences are temporarily lost.

Step one: Determine what your home generator will power

When the GenSpring Power team meets with any prospective customer, it’s common for the first series of questions to center around defining what they want their home generator to do when the power goes out. More often than not the answer is, “Everything, if possible!”

In defining the load requirements for the generator, we start at the electric panel(s) where a visual inspection of the breakers reveals the size of the various loads within the home. This allows us to help the customer better understand their requirements and how they use electrical energy. This typically leads to a discussion about the difference between automatic vs. discretionary loads. Automatic loads (e.g. air-conditioning, water heaters, hot tubs) must be anticipated to run whether you’re home or not, while discretionary appliances (e.g. clothes dryers, ovens, small appliances and lights) includes those where you’ll make a conscious decision to use. By knowing these differences, we can help you understand why we recommend a particular size generator system, tailored for your specific needs.

Step two: Determine where your home generator will be located

The next step is deciding on the best location for your new generator. Sometimes we’ll need to compromise between personal preference and what is physically possible due to existing construction and the location of utilities, such as your electric meter and gas or propane service. Most installations will allow us to install the automatic transfer switch is adjacent to the electric service entrance with the generator nearby, but sometimes we need to consider another location. Once the location has been agreed upon and you’re ready to move ahead, we can outline the cost and schedule generator installation.

Step three: Installing your generator

After scheduling your installation, our service team will visit your home to prepare the site and set the generator. Most of the time these two are performed at the same time. However, if you’re installing a large, liquid cooled generator – above 20kW – then we’ll perform a two-step process instead as we’ll first need to pour a slab and allow it to cure before setting the generator.

After setting the generator, the electric and gas installation follows. When installing the automatic transfer switch, your power will be turned off for a short period of time to allow the interface to be made. We will also connect the generator power and control wiring to the transfer switch. (The same is true for the gas connection when tying it in, but don’t worry, we always relight any pilots if necessary!) Again, this often occurs at the same time, or within a day or two, depending on your schedule and our workload.

Step four: Testing your standby generator

After installation is complete, we will inspect everything, test your brand-new generator and even simulate a power outage in order to allow the generator to switch on and fully operate. We will also provide a complete orientation of the generator system for you and your family so feel comfortable with the basic operation and controls. Congratulations, your home generator installation is now complete, and you are ready for the next storm!

I’m back!

If you have been checking-in for new posts and haven’t found any recently, it’s not because of a lack of interest. We have been busy helping people after the effects of the hurricane last fall, and early snow storm in December. Near the end of 2016, I named my son, Glenn Preble, president of our company! Glenn joined me in the business more than 10 years ago after he graduated from the University of Georgia. Since joining our team, he has really stepped up and learned every aspect of the business. Glenn is both professionally and technically one of the best people in the home generator industry across this great country. You may have spoken with Glenn’s wife, Jackie, who is officially leading our customer service team, processing billing, as well as scheduling Glenn’s appointments. How will an EMP affect my home generator?

In an uncertain world, we face many threats to the electric grid that could affect our way of life. The most commonly mentioned threats to the electric grid are cyberterrorism and Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP). Of these threats, the one that I am frequently asked about is how an EMP could affect the operation of a home generator system. There are two EMP events most commonly mentioned that can impact the Earth:

How an EMP will affect the electric grid and your home generator is a function of many factors outside of your control. A thorough discussion of EMPs and their potential impact is beyond the scope of this writing. Our purpose here is to help you understand the potential risk so you can make an informed decision about what is best for your individual circumstances and then take appropriate steps to protect your generator system and its electronic components.

The major components of your home generator include the engine, rotor/stator, and electronics that control starting, voltage regulation, etc. Of all these components, the electronics are the most at risk from an EMP. Depending on the type of EMP event and its magnitude, electronic components could fail, rendering your generator inoperable.

Generally, there are two approaches to providing protection from an EMP event. One approach is to “shield” or “harden”, providing overall protection for your generator system. The other is to identify those components at risk and protect those critical components that could fail from an EMP event. Shielding or hardening requires covering and sealing with a fine metal screen mesh or solid metal enclosure to prevent the EMP-generated radiation from entering the equipment being protected. Successfully shielding or hardening the typical home generator system while maintaining its functionality is not practical for most homeowners. However, identifying and acquiring those critical electronic components and protecting them in a Faraday Cage is both accepted science and practical to accomplish. Depending on the age and brand of your generator system, you either have multiple electronic components or a single control board. To identify those critical electronic components, contact your home generator dealer or manufacturer to determine cost and availability.

I have a generator on my mountain getaway, how do I know it’s working if I’m not there?

Fortunately there are two communication technologies available to monitor utility power and generator status on the brands we represent. One is internet-based, and the other is cellular-based. Both technologies allow both the customer and us, as your dealer, to monitor the status of utility power and the generator on a real-time basis. The benefit for the homeowner is that you know that everything is working correctly. The benefit for us, as your dealer, is that if there is a problem with your generator, we are alerted and are able to quickly address any service issues. We have had very good results with both systems.

Internet Based – OnCue

The Kohler solution, OnCue, is internet-based and offers the ability to monitor in real-time your generator’s status and performance over the internet. OnCue also provides notifications, text and email status updates. The only drawback is that if your internet connection goes down, so does your communication with the generator. OnCue only works with Kohler generators and is currently only available on Kohler generator models RESA, RESAL, and RCL. Cellular Based – InfoHub

Case Study

As an example of the benefits of this technology, one of our customers has a remote mountain cabin in Ellijay and we are using InfoHub to monitor his power. The cabin is at the end of the power line, approximately 3 miles off the main road. We have two Briggs & Stratton generators on site, one serving the home and the other a well – approximately 300 feet away from the home. The customer was experiencing considerable power outages, some of long duration. We suggested InfoHub as communication link to keep abreast of the status of utility power, as well as the operation of the generator system when they are not there. Prepping Supplies for Your Home Generator

In an earlier post, How Long Can My Generator Run?, I discussed expected fuel consumption when operating on your home generator and the role of oil in the engine. If you have not read that post, I encourage you to do so. In this post I will add to that discussion with emphasis on the importance of having adequate supplies on hand to keep your generator running during an extended power outage.

During a recent ice storm, many of our customers experienced 5 days without utility power – the longest in recent memory. The length of time for power restoration is driven by the scope and the extent of the damage as well as ongoing weather conditions. The reality is that when extensive damage to the utility distribution system occurs, it takes time to restore power, and those customers who are the most remote will likely be the last to be reconnected.

Since you have taken the first step by purchasing a home generator and becoming prepared, the next step is to determine the length of time you want to prepare for. My personal plan is to be prepared for a minimum of a month. My generator prepping supplies include sufficient oil, oil filters, air filters, and spark plugs. Since each person’s planning horizon is different, I have put together a list of what I recommend for a one-week generator prepping package.

During an extended outage, you should plan to change the oil every 72 hours of operation or twice a week for an air-cooled generator running continuously. Between those oil changes, check the oil level and add oil as needed.

The One-Week Generator Prepping Package:

Oil Change Procedure

First, turn off the generator. If the engine has been running, wait a few minutes for the oil to settle. Open the oil drain line and drain into a suitable container. Open the oil fill cap to facilitate complete draining. Once drained, remove the old oil filter, turning counter-clockwise. Before replacing, oil filter coat the rubber gasket with fresh oil and retighten until snug. After snug, hand tighten another 1/3 turn to completely seal. Plug the drain line and add the recommended amount of oil for your engine, checking the oil level as you go and adding as needed to bring oil up to full mark. Do not over fill. Replace the oil cap and run engine for 5 minutes to circulate oil. All of our generators have a base that supports the generator. When we install a generator system, we include site preparation as part of the installation. The purpose of our site preparation is to ensure a solid, level foundation for the generator and also raise the level of the generator above any surface rain water. For home generators up to 20kW, we use 4×6 Grade 1 treated timbers to frame a level box. The box is filled with a compacted mix of granite rock and pea gravel. The rock helps provide a quieter and cleaner installation. All liquid cooled generators require a concrete slab because of their weight.

For our smaller generators, 20kW and under, we strive to complete the installation in one day. This includes site preparation, setting the generator and completing the gas and electric installation. If the job is complex, it may take a little longer.

For the larger generators, the process takes longer because of what’s involved. For example, for our larger liquid cooled generators, we need to pour a concrete slab. Preparing the site and pouring the slab is accomplished in one day, but the slab needs a week to cure. After that, once we set the generator, the rest of the installation goes quickly.

Today’s home standby generators are fully automatic, self-contained and built to be permanently installed outside your home. They use an automotive style muffler and sound attenuation to limit sound to as low as the mid 60 db’s. Environmentally friendly natural gas or propane are the fuels of choice. The most popular small automatic home generators range in size from 7 to 20kW.

How does a home standby generator system work?

Within seconds of a power outage, the engine will automatically start, allowing your home generator to begin producing power. After a short delay (10 to 60 seconds) the Automatic Transfer Switch will restore power to the designated emergency circuits in your home. The home generator control system will automatically monitor utility power. When the utility power is restored, the Automatic Transfer Switch will safely transfer you back to the utility. The home generator will then go through a short cool down cycle, automatically shut down and then wait for the next event.

How does a home generator produce power?

In the simplest terms, an engine revolves around a magnetic field called a rotor through a stationary coil of wires called a stator. This movement induces an electro-motive force (EMF) into the stator coils. As the magnetic lines of flux cut across the stationary windings, the difference in electrical “potential” is induced into the stator windings. When a complete circuit is formed (by connecting a load to the stator windings) current flow occurs. The current (in amperes) delivered to the load is affected by:

During An Extended Power Outage, How Can I Conserve Propane Fuel?

As previously discussed in How Long Can My Generator Run? , when propane is your source of fuel for your home and generator, you have a finite source of fuel to manage. The amount of fuel is limited by your tank size. Your generator’s fuel consumption is a function of the electric loads of the home served by the generator. The more power the generator needs to produce, the greater the fuel consumption. If you are in an extended power outage with concerns about when propane deliveries will occur, then managing your propane supply may become necessary.

There are two ways you can manage your propane consumption when relying on your home generator:

Common Sense Conservation

Common Sense Conservation means only using electric power for what is essential. For example, using lights only where needed and minimizing the use of non-essential appliances. This could include adjusting your thermostat to reduce energy consumption or turning off non-essential heating and air-conditioning systems. Any of these strategies will reduce the amount of electric power your generator needs to produce, thus lowering your overall propane fuel consumption.

Turning Off the Generator

If you need to go beyond Common Sense Conservation, then turning off the generator for periods of time is another strategy to reduce propane fuel consumption. If the weather is mild and you don’t need power, you can turn the generator off for several hours during the day and then restart your generator to power refrigerators, etc. Alternatively, you can use your generator during the day, turn if off when you go to bed, and then restart the next morning. The goal is to find the conservation strategy that best works for you until normal propane deliveries can be restored. Always consult your generator Owner’s Manual for proper turning off and restarting of your generator.

Kohler 14 RESA – Quiet, Reliable & Powerful!

When the chips are down, most of us want to make sure that we have the best available to back us up.

One home generator system that has impressed us is the Kohler Model 14 RESA. While there are certainly smaller and larger generators, the Kohler 14 RESA in our opinion is the sweet spot when it comes to a small, quiet, reliable and powerful home generator. With 14,000 watts of power, you can run a 4 ton AC without working up a sweat. When power quality (accurate voltage and frequency) is important to you, it’s hard to beat a Kohler.

About two years ago GenSpring Power was called on to help a home owner design a generator solution for his weekend cabin in the North Georgia Mountains. It was not practical to have utility power brought in, and so the owner began to search for alternatives. We met with the owner to recommend solutions and we settled on the Kohler 14 RESA. The logic in recommending the Kohler 14 RESA was the same as the title of this post – quiet, reliable and powerful. Another feature that appealed to the home owner was how fast Kohler responds – less than 10 seconds to have power. Since the application was primary power, there was no need for a transfer switch. We therefore tied directly into the 100 AMP panel for the cabin. The generator was located about 150 feet from the cabin near the propane tank, and so for convenience we wired remote-starting capability into the cabin. The electrical requirements for the small cabin included a well, water heater, cooking, heating & air-conditioning system, and lighting. The cabin also had a propane gas refrigerator. Our plan was to keep the generator in the auto mode all the time so that it could exercise weekly and the owner could turn it on and off as needed from inside the cabin.

One of the challenges we faced was how to keep the battery charged without the benefit of the utility power trickle charge. For that, we incorporated a solar battery charger system. The battery charging worked fine initially, but infrequent use, a very cold winter, clouds and shadows required that we revisit the best way to keep the battery fully charged. Finally, after taking down a tree that was casting shadows, installing larger solar panels, and increasing the generator exercise frequency, we were able to solve the battery charging issue.

Fuel, Spark & Compression

In our earlier post, How Long Can My Generator Run? , we discussed the role of fuel and oil to keep your generator running during an extended outage. In this post we will discuss how fuel, spark & compression work together to allow your engine to start and continue to run so that your home generator can produce power when you need it.

The engine is the heart of your generator system. Without the mechanical energy produced by the internal combustion engine, no electric power will be generated. For the engine to start and run, sufficient rotation must occur.

Cranking, initiated by the control board of the generator system, is the action that occurs when the starter causes the engine to rotate or turn over. The starter is an electric DC motor that facilitates the cranking process. The starter receives its power from the battery, via a starter contactor or solenoid. Therefore the battery is a critical component of the cranking process and must have sufficient amp hour capacity to turn the engine over.

Starting and running is the desired end result that occurs when sufficient revolutions of the engine occur to cause compression and spark to combine with the correct mixture of fuel and air to allow combustion in the cylinders. Once the engine has started, it will continue to run as long as sufficient fuel, spark and compression is present.

Fuel as the name implies, is the energy that allows the engine to run. Fuel needs to mix with the proper amount of air for combustion. Air is drawn through a filter to remove undesirable impurities. The air filter acts as a cleaner and measurement device to ensure the correct fuel air ratio. Therefore a clean air filter plays a critical role in ensuring the right balance of fuel and air.

Spark is achieved through induction to the spark plugs from the magnetos as the flywheel rotates during starting and running. Spark plugs are specific to the engine application and the work it is intended to do. Weak or no spark can be traced to three potential issues – bad magnetos, cracked spark plug wires causing the spark to ground out, or fouled spark plugs.

Compression is achieved through the movement of the pistons within the cylinders. This movement, when combined with sufficient force, allows the pistons to create adequate compression with the fuel and air mix to support combustion. Valves within the cylinder head open and close as the piston moves up and down, allowing fuel to enter the combustion chamber and the exhaust to exit at the optimum time. It is not uncommon for the compression to be slightly different between two cylinders, however, if the differential is more that 25%, then either the valves are out of adjustment or there is a more serious problem within one of the cylinders.

Always consult the Manufacturer’s Operation and Owner Manuals for precise information relative to your home generator system. This overview is not intended or replace competent technical service. Proper maintenance, whether you do it yourself or have someone do it for you, pays for itself through performance, longer equipment life and lower overall cost. Always use genuine parts. How Long Can My Home Generator Run?

This is a question asked by many of our customers. There are two primary factors that will affect the continuous operation of your home generator engine during an extended period: fuel to power the engine and oil for lubrication and cooling. In future post, Fuel, Spark & Compression, we will address the essentials required for the engine to start and run.

Fuel to Power the Engine

Natural gas and propane are the fuels of choice for home generators. In addition to being environmentally friendly, natural gas and propane do not become stale over time. Since both fuels burn very cleanly, the problems associated with gasoline carburetors and stale fuel are eliminated.

Natural gas is delivered by underground pipeline to your home, thus it is less susceptible to falling trees, as with overhead power lines. So as long as the natural gas supply is available, you will have an infinite source of fuel to keep your generator running.

Propane is stored in large tanks, either buried or above ground. These tanks typically range in size from 250 to 1,000 gallons. When considering size, it’s important to understand that your propane tank only holds 80% of its rated capacity so when full, a 500 gallon tank only holds 400 gallons. The tank size that is right for you depends on several factors including:

For example, if your generator’s half-load (1/2 the rated capacity of the generator) fuel consumption is 1-1/2 gallons per hour, you can expect to use approximately 36 gallons per day during normal operation, plus other needs of your home. See your generator manufacturer’s Owner’s Manual to see determine your actual half-load fuel consumption. I suggest that when you are planning tank size, remember that it will be unlikely that the propane truck has just topped you off when the power goes out. So err on the side of more propane storage rather than less.

Oil to Lubricate and Cool the Engine

Oil is the life blood of the engine that powers your generator. The oil in your engine serves as both a lubricant as well as a coolant to help keep your engine running well and minimizing wear and tear. As your engine runs, oil breaks down and needs to be replaced or changed – typically every 50 hours of operation for air-cooled engines or once year is what most manufacturers recommend. Depending on your particular engine, the outside temperature, and how hard it is working to serve your needs will determine oil consumption. Other factors that can influence oil consumption include condition of valves, piston, piston rings, cylinders, gaskets, etc.

The amount of oil your engine holds is a function of its size. You should check your oil level during extended run times, and keep a supply of the recommended oil on hand to meet those needs. Too much oil is just as bad as too little, so add carefully. Consult your Owner’s Manual to determine the amount and weight of oil recommended. When you change oil, always change your oil filter and only use genuine parts.

“Be Prepared”, the Boy Scout Motto, has been repeated over and over again by many young men. As a former Boy Scout myself, and the father of 3 Eagle Scouts, I’ve heard it many times. Little did I realize at the time that I would be in the business of helping so many others achieve their goal of being prepared.

In my 32 years in the natural gas industry, the importance of safety and reliability was ingrained in me as a major commitment to our customers. In other words, our mission was to do everything possible to make sure natural gas was available for our customers to keep their homes warm and comfortable, regardless of the winter storms raging outside. The only problem was that our customers were dependent on the electric utility to run their furnace fans, and since most of the utility lines were above ground, they were far more susceptible to failure. Years later, it’s not just the weather anymore, the news constantly reminds us of new threats to the power grid from cyberattacks, solar flares, and terrorism.

Fortunately, due to innovation and technology, affordable power solutions are now available to help homeowners become prepared.
